For the couple
A hand-painted icon as a wedding gift
In the Eastern tradition the couple are blessed with icons, which they then take to their new home: they become the centre of their prayer corner. A wedding icon is a gift that never goes out of fashion and one day will pass to the children.

Traditional wedding icons
In the Russian and Greek traditions parents bless the couple with a pair of icons: Christ for the groom and the Mother of God for the bride. The two icons, painted as a coherent diptych in size and style, are then placed together in the couple's home.

Wedding diptych
Christ Pantocrator and the Mother of God as a pair, in the same size.
The Wedding at Cana
Christ's first miracle, during a wedding feast.

An icon to hand down
In the Christian tradition the icons with which parents bless the couple become the family icons of the new home and one day pass to the children. A hand-painted icon, with its certificate of authenticity on real parchment and its story written on the back, is the couple's first family heirloom: a spiritual and material investment meant for future generations.
A shared gift
A wedding icon is often a gift from several people: friends, witnesses, in-laws and relatives joining together. The couple's names, the date and the donors' names can be recorded on the back of the panel or in the booklet.
