FAQ
Frequently asked questions about hand-painted icons
The questions we are asked most often by those wishing to commission an icon: timing, sizes, materials, delivery. For anything else, Concetta Basile is available for a conversation.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an icon take?
Months. Every stage needs drying time and the colours must rest before the final olifa. For an event with a fixed date, commission many months in advance.
How much does a hand-painted icon cost?
A sacred icon has no list price: it is not sold like merchandise. Those who commission it make an offering according to their means, proportionate to the time and materials its making requires (size, number of figures, inscriptions). The «Request your icon» page shows the estimated time of each stage; the offering is agreed with Concetta during the conversation.
Which sizes are available?
From 8×10 cm (miniature) to 50×70 cm, including 12×16, 18×24, 24×30, 30×40 and 40×50 cm, plus fully bespoke sizes. Rectangular, square, round or arched panels.
What gold is used?
23¾ karat gold leaf, applied by hand. Every icon is fully gilded.
What colours are used?
Natural pigments (earths, ochres, minerals) ground by hand and bound with egg yolk: traditional egg tempera.
In what language are the inscriptions?
Greek or Latin, complete with names and liturgical titles (for example IC XC, MP ΘY).
Does the icon come with a certificate of authenticity on real parchment?
Yes. Every icon comes with a certificate of authenticity on real parchment with photographic documentation of the entire process, stage by stage, and an explanatory booklet on subject and symbolism, in Italian or in Italian and English (also with a third language).
Do you ship abroad?
Yes, worldwide, with protective packaging, standard or express courier and insurance on request. Collection in person is also possible. Because customs rules, couriers and international conditions change often, availability, timing and shipping costs to each country are checked at the time of commission.
Can I follow the work in progress?
Yes: you receive photographs of every stage and can visit the atelier, taking part spiritually in the birth of the icon.
Can several people give an icon together?
Yes, it is a tradition: friends, families or parish communities can commission an icon together.
