Where to place icons at home: the icon corner

In Eastern Christian homes icons are not hung here and there like pictures: they have their own place, the «beautiful corner» (in Russian krasny ugol), where the family gathers in prayer. It is a simple tradition that can be lived in any home.

    The right place

    • If possible, on a wall facing east, the direction of light and resurrection, like the altars of ancient churches.
    • In a corner or on a quiet wall of the living room or bedroom, where you can stop, standing or seated.
    • At eye level or slightly above: an icon is looked at face to face, not from above or below.
    • Away from televisions, posters and ornaments: the icon needs sober space around it.
    • Sheltered from direct sun, radiators, fireplaces and damp, which can damage the panel and gilding.

    The order of icons

If there is more than one icon, follow the order of the iconostasis: Christ on the viewer's right, the Mother of God on the left; above or beside them, the Trinity or a feast icon; then the family's patron saints, guardian angels and name saints. A cross may crown it all. The corner should grow with the family: an icon for the wedding, one for each birth, one for important moments.

    The lamp and the gestures

Traditionally an oil lamp (vigil lamp) is lit before the icons, at least on feast days and during prayer; a candle can also be used, carefully, away from the panel. Beside them you can place a blessed olive branch, holy water, the book of Psalms. Concetta Basile can advise on the size and subject best suited to the space, even from a photograph of the wall. Like every icon by Concetta Basile, it is fully gilded with 23¾ karat gold, with inscriptions in Greek or Latin, and is commissioned with an offering proportionate to the time and materials of the work.

    Frequently asked questions

Can an icon be placed in a bedroom?

Yes: it is a very ancient tradition, especially for the couple's wedding icon and for the guardian angel or patron saint above children's beds.

Can an icon be placed in a kitchen or office?

Yes, provided it is in a respectful spot protected from fumes, steam and heat: in a kitchen a small size away from the stove is best; in an office an icon accompanies work and hospitality.
