Messengers of light

Hand-painted icons of angels and archangels

Angels are pure spirit: they have neither body nor face. Yet the icon paints them, because Scripture saw them appear in human form, as messengers. In the gold of the icon their wings, their garments and their gaze say one thing: the joy of those who stand before God and bring his word to humankind.

How an angel is painted in the icon

The angel looks like an ageless youth, with wings spread or folded behind the shoulders. In the hair there is often a diadem or ribbon; in the hand a slender staff, the sign of the messenger, and sometimes a transparent sphere bearing Christ's monogram or a cross. Archangels are often dressed like dignitaries of the Byzantine court, with tunic and mantle, or in armour in the case of Michael, leader of the heavenly hosts.

Wings and garments are crossed by highlights of gold and light: angels have no light of their own, they reflect God's. This is why, more than in any other subject, the gold of the panel becomes part of their figure.

The three archangels and the Guardian Angel

    Saint Michael

«Who is like God?»: prince of the heavenly hosts, with sword or spear. Protector in the trials and battles of life.

    Saint Gabriel

The announcer: he brings Mary the news of the Incarnation. An icon for those awaiting a birth or good news.

    Saint Raphael

«God heals»: Tobias's travelling companion in the Book of Tobit. Protector of travellers, doctors and married couples.

    The Guardian Angel

The angel who accompanies every person from birth: among the most loved gifts for a baptism or a child's room.

The Angel with the Golden Hair

Among the oldest surviving Russian icons is the Angel with the Golden Hair, painted in tempera in the second half of the twelfth century and attributed to the Novgorod school, now in the Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg. Every lock of its hair is traced with fine threads of gold: divine light passing through the figure. It is a perfect example of how, in the icon, gold is not ornament but theology.

Seraphim, cherubim and the heavenly hosts

Alongside the archangels, the icon also paints the other angelic orders: the six-winged seraphim, as the prophet Isaiah saw them (Is 6:2), and the cherubim, often shown with wings covered in eyes, as in Ezekiel's visions. They appear around the throne of Christ, in domes and in feast icons; three angels are also at the centre of the icon of the Holy Trinity, the Hospitality of Abraham. Like every icon by Concetta Basile, it is fully gilded with 23¾ karat gold, with inscriptions in Greek or Latin, and is commissioned with an offering proportionate to the time and materials of the work.

    Frequently asked questions

Which angel icon should I give for a baptism?

The Guardian Angel is the most traditional gift; also Saint Michael if the child is called Michael, or Saint Gabriel and Saint Raphael for the corresponding names. The child's name and the date can be recorded in the booklet that accompanies the icon.

Can all three archangels be painted together?

Yes: there are icons that bring together Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, a subject suited to someone bearing one of their names, to a family or to a church dedicated to the archangels. The size is agreed together according to the number of figures.

Do angels in icons always have wings?

Almost always, because the wings signify their spiritual nature and the swiftness with which they carry out God's will. Even in the Trinity of the Hospitality of Abraham the three angels have wings, though they sit at table like pilgrims.
